COVID Summer Recovery - Week 4: What Am I Feeling?

What are feelings?

  • Emotions are what we feel in our heart and our bodies (that’s why we call them feelings!) and they happen in response to something that has happened, is happening, or will happen.

  • Some notes about emotions…

    • They can be small, medium, big or somewhere in between.

    • Even though it sometimes feels like they last forever, they are kind of like the weather – always changing, even when we aren’t noticing (this is why mindfulness is so important!). In fact, most emotions only last about 90 seconds!

    • Feelings are not facts – how I feel about something, may not be how you feel about something AND just because I feel scared when the lights are off, doesn’t make it more likely that a monster is in the room!

Why Care About Emotions?

  1. when you know what you are feeling, you are better able to manage your emotions because you can notice them quicker.

  2. when you understand your emotions it’s easier to understand those of others

  3. it’s easier to connect with your kid if you know how both of your feelings impact each other.

If any of the activities seem difficult for your child to either understand or they seem highly emotional while completing them, please considering reaching out for professional support as this may be an indication they need additional help.
